Selectboard addresses Bog Road repairs, generator containment and surging recycling costs

The Stratford Selectboard on Dec. 1 discussed several infrastructure and service issues, including road repairs, environmental safeguards for a backup generator, and sharply higher recycling transport costs.
Selectboard Chair Harry Juergens said the town has sent letters to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation seeking repairs on Bog Road and urged residents to write the DOT to demonstrate community interest. Juergens said the board discussed Class 5 versus Class 6 road status and noted FEMA funds contributed to repairs this year; follow-up work is expected to continue into spring 2026.
The board also discussed a caller’s earlier reference to Department of Justice involvement in an unrelated Bog Road situation; members said they would monitor that development and did not provide further details.
Ron Scott Jr. asked maintenance staff to design a spill containment pan for the town’s diesel backup generator, noting the pan must meet environmental requirements because of the generator’s proximity to municipal wellheads. Maintenance will collect measurements and propose size and materials.
Selectman Charlie Goulet reported recyclables transport costs have jumped dramatically — a cited plastic-transport quote increased from $300 to $1,500 — and said the town will explore alternative contractors and whether to continue current recycling practices. Goulet also said the town plans to switch to LED lighting in some facilities to reduce energy costs.
The board approved routine manifests, minutes and permits during the meeting and adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
