Selectboard authorizes search for new municipal auditor as audit costs rise

The Stratford Selectboard on Dec. 1 authorized staff to request proposals from alternative municipal audit firms after hearing that fees from the town’s current auditor, Coos Advisors, have increased.
Suzanne Goulet told the board that Coos Advisors’ costs have risen and that the town needs an auditor familiar with New Hampshire municipal audits and the state-required reports the town must file. The board voted 3-0 to allow Goulet to seek proposals from other qualified firms.
Goulet also reviewed recent abatements tied to property-status changes — such as removal of trailers — and billing adjustments in cases where sewer charges did not apply (for example, when a pool is filled without using sewer service). She said the board should consider updating ordinances to clarify how pool filling is billed for sewer purposes.
The board approved the motion to solicit audit vendors 3-0 and asked staff to report back with proposals and any recommended ordinance language changes.
