The Laramie City Council on July 7 approved a resort liquor license for the University of Wyoming doing business as UW Catering and Events at 1000 East University Avenue for the July 8, 2026 through May 7, 2027 license term.
A city clerk’s office summary noted the unique nature of the request: the license class requires a $1,000,000 valuation invested in the property and at least 100 rooms available to the public. The clerk told council the university reports 1,400 rooms available for conferences and events across campus facilities.
Derek Jones, the university representative, told council the license would allow UW to provide full-service alcohol service for conferences and the Gateway and conference centers while continuing to contract with local vendors. “We’re still gonna work with all of our great vendors here in the city to provide that service,” Jones said.
Councilors probed differences between the resort license and current practice. The clerk said UW now uses alcohol-catering permits through other vendors and maintains a separate license in the student union. Vice Mayor and other councilors said information on the application eased their concerns and they were comfortable moving forward.
A motion to approve the license carried by roll call, 8–0 with one absent. The council authorized the mayor and city clerk to sign.
