Upper Moreland EAC schedules park volunteer day, plant giveaway and Bird Town event

The Upper Moreland Environmental Advisory Council approved the minutes from its June 3 meeting and scheduled a volunteer weeding and mulching session at Masons Mill Park for July 9, meeting at the township compost yard.
Council members reported staffing a table at the township’s first PERT Tweet and Greet, estimating about 50 interactions with community attendees, and said they would like to obtain a Bird Town banner for future outreach displays. The council plans to give away more than 50 Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed) plants at a screening of the documentary Extraordinary Caterpillar on Aug. 1, 2026, at 11:15 a.m. at the UMFPL.
Members outlined a proposed Migratory Bird Day event for Oct. 10 at Masons Mill Park that would include demonstrations of the Merlin App, binoculars for birdwatching, informational tabling, an outreach contact with Liberty Bird Alliance, instruction on bird‑friendly plants, library book displays and a possible story time, a bird walk and a ‘lights out’ / Feather Friendly awareness component. The council also noted it needs signage for the playground to inform park attendees about the event.
The council identified fall newsletter topics including a new meadow policy, climate change content, a planned Facebook page introduction, Earth Day coverage and promotion of the Bird Town event. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
