Plainville discusses pickleball court, trail support resolution and lifeguard staffing

The council heard updates from the parks department and council members about recent events and near-term projects. Chair (S3) praised the July 4 celebration at the library and thanked Jamie (library staff) and Joe (grounds crew) for organizing and moving picnic tables.

S3 said Charlie Ramsey had briefly discussed a proposed pickleball court; the group has not finalized engineering details but is seeking vendors and grant funding. “They’re working on trying to raise some funds for this,” S3 said. Council members said they generally support a resolution affirming support for the type of project; Michael (staff) is reviewing a draft resolution that would be used to apply for noncompetitive grant funding.

Separately, council members raised concerns about people riding dirt bikes, ATVs and go-karts on publicly leased land reportedly designated for farm use. Staff (S7) said the lease limits the land to farm use and recommended investigating whether users have permission or are trespassing; the council directed staff to gather information and send a letter if appropriate.

Parks staffing was also addressed: S1 reported two lifeguards completed training and passed certification; a third candidate encountered an issue and may not have completed training. Council discussed adjusting staff hours after local softball season ends to help scheduling.

Overall, the session produced direction for staff to finalize a trail-resolution draft and to investigate lease use; no formal adoption of the pickleball or trail projects occurred at this meeting.
