Undersheriff urges countywide shift to Tyler emergency system; says 18-month transition would cut duplicative work

Baker Countys undersheriff told commissioners on July 7 that the countys 30-year-old SmartCOP dispatch and records system has reached limits that impair data sharing, address mapping and efficient report writing. The undersheriff recommended moving to a Tyler Technologies public-safety platform and expanding Axon body-worn camera capabilities to give dispatchers live camera feeds, GPS location from officer cameras and automated draft-report tools.
"We're not the only ones in the same boat of moving," the undersheriff said, arguing the platform would dramatically cut the time personnel currently spend reconciling duplicate bookings and transcribing reports. He said the conversion would be disruptive during implementation but predicted it would ultimately reduce overtime and speed billing and recordkeeping: "It's gonna be about an 18-month process," he said.
The undersheriff also highlighted possible near-term costs and multi-year license commitments, and said the sheriff's office has worked with local agencies and vendors to evaluate integration and conversion needs. Commissioners asked for follow-up cost and recurring-budget forecasts and for reconciled line-item figures comparing the current annual spend to first-year conversion and later-year run rates.
