Chamber, Keep Carter County Beautiful and Parks & Rec update commissioners on events and projects

Joy McCray of the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce thanked commissioners for supporting the Omnium bike race, credited the event with attracting visitors and new residents, described a free candidate forum for May elections, and reported that the backyard ice rink program met its fundraising target and will expand to a larger rink next year.
Ed Jordan, founder of Keep Carter County Beautiful, introduced Don Hlavaty as the group's new director. Hlavaty thanked the commission for past support, said donated funds are spent locally to support school outreach on recycling and beautification, and urged enforcement of ordinances addressing uncovered loads and roadside trash.
Ken Gouge of the Parks & Recreation Board provided updates on projects including Gap Creek Park, Fish Springs Park, and a proposed tunnel trail as part of the Tweetsie Trail expansion. Gouge said the board works through community groups and volunteers and asked the commission to consider whether a county Parks & Recreation department should be established.
