Commission tables juvenile detention rate dispute until March meeting

Faced with a letter announcing a rate increase the Juvenile Detention Center planned to implement, the Carter County commission voted 16–4 with one abstention on Feb. 22 to table consideration of the contract and rate change until March.
The Carter County commission voted on Feb. 22 to table a response to a Juvenile Detention Center notice of a rate increase that the county was told would take effect March 1, 2021.
County Attorney Josh Hardin presented a letter Mayor Woodby had received from the Juvenile Detention Center explaining a rate increase and warning that services would be denied if the county did not agree. Hardin told commissioners the contract expires in September.
Commissioner Mark Blevins moved to table the item until the March meeting; Commissioner Willie Campbell seconded the motion. The motion carried with 16 yes, 4 no (Isaiah Grindstaff, Austin Jaynes, Sonja Culler, Robin McKamey) and 1 abstention (Charles Von Cannon).
The board did not take a final vote on the contract or the new rates at the Feb. 22 meeting and directed that the issue return for consideration in March. No additional terms or alternate vendors were discussed on the record during the meeting.
The tabling preserves the county’s ability to negotiate or seek alternatives before the contract term noted in the letter.
