Board hears new 'Profile of a Learner' designed to guide district strategic goal

Grand Island Public Schools staff introduced the district’s finalized 'Profile of a Learner,' a four-attribute framework staff say will guide the district’s strategic goal of ensuring every student has a plan after high school.

A district presenter told the board the profile grew from nearly 2,800 survey responses and follow-up focus groups that included students, staff, families and community partners. The profile lists four characteristics — adaptable learners, confident communicators, problem solvers and responsible contributors — and staff said the traits were crafted so a preschooler and a graduating senior could both see themselves in the framework.

Presenters said the 2026–27 work will focus on sharing the profile widely, aligning curriculum and professional learning, identifying current instructional evidence of the traits, and developing systems to monitor students’ post-high-school plans. Board members asked how stakeholders were identified and how the district plans to measure and follow up on graduates; staff said the district will research measurement tools and use existing benchmarks such as AIMSweb while exploring longer-term follow-up options.

Why it matters: The profile is intended as a 'North Star' for curriculum, assessment and post-graduation planning. Staff said the profile will shape professional learning and district-level alignment to support the board’s 100% plan.

Next steps: Staff will continue stakeholder sharing, align curriculum documents, and report back with tools and potential measures to monitor students' plans after graduation.
