The Police Chief reported that Saint John officers responded to 579 law incidents in June, investigations led to 38 arrests and 54 charges, and the department issued a combined total of 590 traffic actions (204 citations and 386 written warnings).
“The officers responded to 579 law incidents,” the Chief said, and added that there were zero vehicle thefts for the month. He flagged two large fraud cases affecting older residents: one involving about $37,000 and another of roughly $15,000. The chief said the first case involved an 88-year-old woman who was scammed and that investigators identified phone spoofing and an unauthorized withdrawal as part of the scheme. In the second case, the chief said scammers convinced an elderly couple to withdraw $15,000 and leave the money for pickup; investigators have leads and believe an app-based delivery service was used to move the cash.
On department staffing, the chief said the written sergeant promotional test has been completed and is awaiting grading; candidates who pass will be scheduled for interviews. He also reported that an additional officer, recruited from the Cherryville Police Department and described as having around seven years of experience and a corporal rank, cleared psychological and physical examinations and background checks and is slated to be sworn in at the town council meeting on July 22.
Commissioners asked about the July 4 weekend and the town’s Freedom Fest; the chief said rain limited activity and there were no major incidents, only a few evening complaints. The chief noted the department is working with Public Works on odometer/mileage reporting errors in the records system.
Next steps: the department will share promotional test results once grading is complete and the new officer will be sworn in at the July 22 council meeting.
