The Community Development Corporation announced a five-part community financial education series to increase access to capital and support small-business development.
Gordon Thomas said the program will begin July 25 at 5 p.m. at the Island Rec Center, facilitated by TD Bank, with subsequent sessions on Aug. 13, Sept. 10, Oct. 8 and Nov. 12. "Our goal through this is to increase access to capital for the community and for potentially development of small businesses," he said.
Board members urged the program be practical and results-focused so participants can pursue financing rather than merely attend lectures. "Rather than it's just being a lecture, add to it an actual practical aspect where you're actually giving these people the opportunity to go for a loan," one board member said. Others recommended capturing participant information, recording sessions for wider access, and training attendees as community ambassadors to build trust within the Gullah community.
Thomas said he is working with TD Bank and the CDC communications team to enable participant follow-up and to create 'wins' that can encourage future participation. The CDC will seek to pilot 'ambassador' outreach and coordinate recordings for later sessions.
No formal vote was taken; the announcement was informational and staff were asked to report back on implementation details and follow-up procedures.
