The CDC board received an update on the William Hilton Parkway Gateway Corridor project and the remaining procedural steps before any construction.
Gordon Thomas reminded attendees that on June 28 the town council approved municipal consent, which allows the project to move forward to the county level. "The next steps in the process of this project will be, the Beaufort County Council will begin a process of adopting the memorandum of understanding between Hilton Head, the town of Hilton Head Island and the Beaufort County Commission," he said. Thomas added county commission action will determine whether the project proceeds and that design and value-engineering would follow any approval.
Board members asked whether the CDC would formally monitor the timeline. Thomas said he had no firm county timeline and that staff are in a holding pattern awaiting Beaufort County; another board member noted the State Department of Transportation must submit materials to the Federal Highway Administration, meaning federal review is also part of the schedule.
Several board members commended Thomas for outreach during earlier contentious discussions in February and encouraged continuing communication with families affected by past highway work.
No vote or formal county action occurred at the CDC meeting; Thomas said the county commission will consider the memorandum of understanding next.
