Cushing selectmen update personnel policy, will present 3% hourly pay proposal at next town meeting

At their May 26 meeting, the Town of Cushing Selectmen voted to revise the personnel policy to add an extra week of vacation for full-time employees after 20 years of service and agreed to present a proposed 3% raise for hourly employees as part of next year’s budget for approval by the legislative body.
Town Clerk Lisa Young raised an unrelated operational question about a family clearing an invasive alder from a recently purchased lot in Pleasant View Cemetery; Daniel Staples said he would inspect the site and Liaison to the Cemetery Committee Martha Marchut said she would contact Cemetery Committee Chairman Bob Weisert if follow-up were needed. The board did not conclude that the town must clear lots prior to sale and left responsibility with property owners unless further action is required.
Selectman Daniel Staples initially moved to grant a 3% raise to hourly employees in 2016, but Chairman Alton Grover noted the board cannot appropriate funds for 2016 before the legislative body approves next year’s budget; the board rescinded the immediate-implementation motion and instead voted to present a 3% raise in next year’s budget for voter approval (motion carried 4-0-1; Chairman Grover recorded an abstention).
On the Personnel Policy, Selectman Laurie Haynes proposed adding one week of vacation after 10 years; the board amended the motion and ultimately approved adding one week of vacation for all full-time employees after 20 years of service (motion carried 5-0-0). Town Clerk Lisa Young will revise the written Personnel Policy for review at a future meeting.
Votes at a glance: Warrant #19 & #20 approved (motion carried 4-0-1 with Chairman Alton Grover abstaining); minutes of May 11, 2015 accepted (5-0-0); personnel-policy vacation change adopted (5-0-0); motion to present 3% raise to next year’s budget approved for placement on the ballot (4-0-1, chair abstained). The board did not adopt immediate 2016 raises at this meeting.
The board will revisit any follow-up items, including the cemetery lot and the revised Personnel Policy, at the next regular meeting.
