Selectmen approve inspection trip for 1993 pumper-tanker; purchase possible if mechanics clear it

Fire Chief Kiskila told the selectmen that Engine 3 needs a new pump, estimated at $35,000, and reported the department had located a 1993 KME Freightliner pumper-tanker in West Virginia offered at $65,000 with a counteroffer of $57,250. The vehicle was described as having a 1,500 GPM pump, a 1,500-gallon polypropylene tank and an Akron foam system.
Selectmen expressed reservations about buying a 23-year-old apparatus and asked that a local, reputable mechanic inspect the vehicle before any purchase. Fire Department member Holly Scribner said she was wary of the age and interior condition of a 23-year-old truck and urged a needs assessment to ensure the apparatus would fit the town’s needs.
Selectman Daniel Staples moved and Selectman Laurie Haynes seconded a motion to send Assistant Fire Chief Tony Winchenbach, Fire Department member Clarence Flanders and a mechanic to West Virginia to inspect the truck, with authority to purchase if the inspection is satisfactory and funds to come from the Fire Truck Replacement Account. The motion carried 3-0-0. Fire Chief Kiskila said he would contact mechanic Joseph Hatch about joining the inspection.
The board did not vote on an immediate purchase; the motion authorized the inspection trip and conditional purchase if the vehicle is approved by the inspectors.
