Obetz approves land transfer for Buckstone development and announces Meijer store

Obetz City Council on March 9 approved Ordinance 13-26, authorizing the mayor to transfer city land along Williams Road to the Big Walnut Area Community Improvement Corporation (Big Walnut Area CIC) for proposed development in the Buckstone area.
Council suspended the rules and adopted the ordinance on an emergency basis; the suspension motion was made by Todd Gibbs and seconded by Michael Flaherty. The adoption motion was moved by Todd Gibbs and seconded by Mike Kimbler. The vote was unanimous.
Mayor Angela M. Kirk described a Meijer store planned for Buckstone and said the retailer's selection of the site is "a huge compliment to the City" that will provide convenience, jobs and stimulate economic activity. "Meijer is more than a store, it is a regional statement of things coming," Mayor Kirk said. Law Director Gene Hollins also congratulated council on the Meijer deal, describing the retailer's site-selection process as rigorous.
City Administrator Rod Davisson said the land to be transferred is along Williams Road and is proposed for development; details of the development agreement and any incentives were not specified at the March 9 meeting. A public hearing on related tax-increment financing matters was scheduled for April 13, 2026, according to Davisson; he also said land in Hamilton Township within the discussion area will be parkland.
Council did not vote on specific incentives or a final development agreement at the March 9 meeting; the transfer creates the possibility for the project to move forward while staff and partners finalize terms.
