Mayor proclaims July Parks and Recreation Month; resident urges more dog water access at Strawberry Fields

Mayor John Neri opened the July 6 City Council meeting by reading a proclamation declaring July 2026 as National Parks and Recreation Month in Marysville, noting the city’s 34 parks and trails and thanking parks, culture and recreation staff and volunteers for year-round programming.

During the public-comment period, Jeff Pugh, who identified himself and provided his ZIP code, asked the council to consider installing more dog water access at parks—for example, dog-height or foot-activated fountains—so that animals visiting dog areas such as Strawberry Fields can stay hydrated without staff frequently refilling bowls. Pugh said he found one foot-activated fountain at Strawberry Fields but suggested the city explore options and funding to expand that access to other parks.

Mayor Neri and councilmembers thanked parks staff and volunteers for organizing recent Fourth of July and 250th celebration events, praised the Real Madrid soccer camp hosted at Strawberry Fields and noted staff are working with the fireworks vendor to seek a credit for the portion of the show that was canceled after a brush fire. Administrator Stapleton also told the council staff will bring back a draft moratorium on data centers for consideration next week and further discussion with the economic development committee is expected in September.

The proclamation and public comment were recorded in the meeting minutes; no formal action was taken on the dog-water suggestion at this meeting.
