Avon Council renames Clean Energy Commission to Avon Sustainability Commission, expands charge

The Town Council voted March 5 to amend the charge of the Avon Clean Energy Commission and rename it the Avon Sustainability Commission to reflect a broader sustainability mission.
Carrie Firestone, chair of the Clean Energy Commission, described recent programming and partnerships, including a Youth Advisory Council event and collaborations with the Garden Club, Library and Land Trust. She and staff supported a broader charge that would expand the commission’s mission beyond technology adoption to community engagement, resiliency planning and policy advocacy.
The amended charge instructs the newly named Avon Sustainability Commission to advance the town’s April 2024 Community Energy Plan, promote clean energy and building efficiency, encourage sustainable transportation, support waste reduction and resiliency planning, pursue partnerships and funding, and provide regular reports and recommendations to the Town Council.
On a motion by Councilor Ausiello, seconded by Councilor Barthel, the council approved the amended charge and renaming unanimously.
Next steps: councilors asked for regular updates from the commission; the commission chair indicated an intention to return with periodic progress reports and to continue community outreach and hands‑on projects.
