Superintendent outlines two proposed Nahant overrides, explains town meeting-to-ballot process

At the Nahant School Committee meeting May 11, the superintendent summarized the town’s near-term budget choices: a level-service budget article must pass at town meeting to allow the town budget to proceed, and there are two proposed overrides under consideration — a $1,000,000 override and a $650,000 override.

The superintendent said school requests are included in both override proposals and referenced roughly $191,000 of school items discussed in the fiscal materials. He explained the unusual state procedure governing multiple overrides: if both overrides receive majority support at town meeting, the higher-dollar override (the larger appropriation) is the one that ultimately advances to the ballot; therefore voters will determine which, if either, appears on the ballot in early June. "The finance committee's recommendation is that the people should decide that," the superintendent said.

Committee members and staff encouraged residents to attend a presentation and to consult the annual report and finance committee materials to be well informed before Saturday’s town meeting. The superintendent also described a modest reduction in circuit breaker reliance (from $300,000 to $200,000) and noted that some staffing requests in the overrides include funding for up to four new firefighters tied to public‑safety restructuring.

The committee did not take a formal vote on the override proposals; next steps are the town meeting deliberations and, if warranted, a subsequent ballot in early June.
