Teachers from Johnson Elementary presented a staff‑driven school improvement plan for 2026–27 and the Nahant School Committee voted to adopt the plan at its May 11 meeting.
Kayla Harrington, a 5th–6th grade teacher and curriculum lead, outlined the plan’s academic priorities, including continued implementation of Eureka Math Squared with classroom walk‑throughs and peer observations, piloting EL Education for literacy in selected classrooms, expanding adaptive supports such as IXL, and piloting a grading alignment for grades 5–6 to better prepare students for Swampscott Middle School. "We want teachers to deeply understand the instructional materials so instruction maximizes students’ mastery," Harrington said.
Presenters also emphasized social‑emotional learning and positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS). The agenda describes embedding SEL competencies in daily instruction, strengthening restorative practices, and boosting family partnerships to address attendance. Heather (vice chair) praised the staff for a collaborative approach and underscored the committee’s role in ensuring the district provides professional development and funding to implement the plan.
After brief clarifying discussion about scope and cost, Heather moved to accept the school improvement plan as presented; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee recorded no opposing votes during the meeting.
Next steps identified by committee members include finalizing budget implications and incorporating the plan’s professional development needs into the FY27 budget and upcoming PLC schedules. The teachers will continue to provide implementation details and metrics for the committee to review as the school year approaches.
