Council approves community-event grants; vote splits 4–1

On Feb. 5 the Avon Town Council voted to award community-event grants from its Community Events Grant Program. The Council considered two applications and an Avon–Farmington partnership event for the America 250 celebration.
The Assistant Town Manager said the program limit is $7,500 or 25% of an event’s cost and noted about $12,500 remained in the grant line item. Ms. Ausiello moved and Mr. Polhamus seconded the motion to award grants as follows: Avon Soccer Club — $4,690.25 (Art Hennig Memorial Day Soccer Tournament); Avon Youth Lacrosse — $3,112.50 (Falcon Fest); and Avon 250 Celebration — $4,690.25. The motion passed 4–1–0; Ms. Ausiello, Mrs. Barthel, Mrs. Bratton and Mr. Weber voted in favor; Chairman Polhamus opposed.
Why it matters: The program helps underwrite community events that require public-safety resources and other town support; Council discussion included whether applications should state whether the event could proceed without town funding.
What’s next: Grants will be distributed per program rules; Recreation staff will review regulations for public places and the grant application form to consider possible changes, including whether applicants should state if an event can proceed without Town funds.
