The Avon Town Council agreed to move forward with a public outreach plan for the proposed AVFD Fire Facilities Improvement Project that emphasizes a town-wide printed newsletter, an online survey and two open houses.
Assistant Town Manager said Tecton Architects proposed producing a paper newsletter to every household that would include graphics of the proposed Company #3 design, background on fire station planning and a QR code or URL linking to an online survey. The architect’s proposal also calls for two open houses where residents can tour Company #3 and ask questions before or while the survey is collected.
Council members discussed timing (mid- to late-May or holding materials until fall), the value of a clear design for more accurate cost estimates, and whether a tour should occur before the survey. Jim Speich, Council representative to the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, said the open houses would be scheduled prior to survey completion and noted the project includes consideration of Company #1 and Company #4 as part of a comprehensive plan.
The Assistant Town Manager said the quoted cost for developing the outreach materials is $16,400 and that Finance staff will prepare a tax-impact statement if the project advances. Council gave consensus to develop a draft newsletter for review before it is distributed to residents.
Why it matters: A public engagement campaign is intended to improve turnout and gather anonymized resident feedback before the Council spends additional design funds or puts a proposal to referendum.
What’s next: Staff will work with Tecton to produce a draft newsletter and survey questions to return to Council for approval; open houses will be scheduled to accompany the outreach effort.
