Community group proposes reenactment program at high school for Americas 250th anniversary

Representatives of Jennings County Citizens United presented a proposal to stage a high-school program reenacting the Declaration of Independence and related historical events for the 250th anniversary.

Dave Cheatham and Terry Sargent described an outline that would begin with a pledge and national anthem, include short readings or condensed excerpts of historic documents, stage a Socratic-style debate among student participants representing colonial figures, and feature band and choir performances. They said the program would likely involve about 10–15 student participants, would rely on Social Studies department support and faculty rehearsal, and that the group had allocated $1,000 toward costume costs and also received a $1,500 grant from the Community Foundation.

Staff noted the district has policies governing community-group events and that any script for the program would need to go through curriculum approval to ensure it matches school standards. The presenters described the program as civic education and emphasized teaching civility and historical context; staff said they will work through the event parameters and scheduling.
