Greendale hears first reading for $150,000 riverboat appropriation to repair Valley Woods dam

At its July 8 meeting the Greendale City Council conducted a first reading of Ordinance 2026-06, proposing an additional appropriation of $150,000 from Riverboat funds to the stormwater account for emergency repairs to the Valley Woods dam standpipe.
Public Works staff reported the Board of Works opened two bids for the repair work: the low, complete bid was $126,000 and a second bid (Queen City Mechanical) was $191,000. Board of Works recommended proceeding with repairs and staff noted the appropriation request includes contingency for potential easement acquisition costs.
Mayor and council stressed this was only a first reading and that the appropriation and award processes would follow statutory procedures. "We opened two bids; the low bid was $126,000," the public works director said, and the mayor warned that the $150,000 request "might not be enough" depending on easements and other costs.
Council members asked whether the ordinance title would need revision if funds were used for televac work; city attorney and staff said the appropriation language covers the appropriation itself and that televac award did not occur at this meeting. The ordinance will return for subsequent readings before a final appropriations vote.
