The Ely Park and Recreation Board on June 10 directed staff to pursue clear signage and public education about electric scooters and e-bikes in city parks, saying education should be the first step rather than an ordinance.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Scott Kochendorfer told the board the packet included state statute language but that the city was not pursuing a new ordinance; instead the board favored signage and outreach aimed at parents and visitors. Council Representative Adam Bisbee moved to have staff seek out signage with simple, easily understood information and pictograms; Tara Boerst seconded the motion. The motion passed with one objection recorded.
Board members cited variable police staffing and enforcement capacity as reasons to prioritize education. The board limited its action to parks (the board's authority) and did not direct city attorneys to draft local legislation at the meeting.
