IRRRB awards $50,000 for Ely pickleball courts; city to provide in-kind support

The Ely Park and Recreation Board reported on June 10 that the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board approved $50,000 in funding to support construction of proposed pickleball courts.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Scott Kochendorfer told the board city crews cleared trees and restored a road to the site and that the city did not submit an application but will accept the funding. The board said the city will negotiate a lease with the local Pickleball Club similar to the Dog Park arrangement; the city expects to provide in-kind services (staff time, land) but is not committing capital funds to construction.
No formal motion to appropriate city funds was made; the update was listed under old business. Board members thanked IRRRB and noted that the project will move forward contingent on final lease terms and clarifications of responsibilities for maintenance and construction.
