The redesign of Veterans’ Memorial Park Beach (82 Gunhouse St.) has been amended to use regular asphalt instead of porous asphalt. Because regular asphalt is not considered green infrastructure, the paving portion is not eligible for MVP grant funding; drainage improvements, shoreline work and signage remain eligible for the grant.
Committee members noted the switch was more cost-effective, more durable and does not require twice-yearly vacuuming. Amanda Sloan, who has volunteered on conceptual design for the beach, agreed to help compile a list of companies and solicit bids; Gary Bluestein said he would contact Activitas. Amanda estimated the cost to buy and install plants at about $30,000. Another participant (recorded as Frank) is preparing estimates for recreation and accessibility items, and a team is drafting interpretive signage plans.
Members clarified roles for project delivery: the Department of Public Works will oversee lot paving and the green‑infrastructure drainage improvements but cannot provide project management for shoreline planting and landscape architecture. The committee discussed identifying a project manager and soliciting bids from firms to oversee shoreline improvements and planting plans.
Next steps included compiling vendor lists and cost estimates and assigning project‑management responsibility for the shoreline components before implementation.
