Humboldt Public Safety Commission accepts resignation, approves $24,249.20 in claims; police chief reports staffing gains

The Humboldt Public Safety Commission on Oct. 14 accepted the resignation of Ann Garvey effective Dec. 12, 2025, approved $24,249.20 in claims and endorsed the monthly budget reports, and heard a staffing and technology update from Police Chief Jacob Miller.
Commissioner Bob Rasmussen moved to accept Garvey's resignation and proceed with hiring a replacement; Taylor Kunert seconded the motion and all members voted aye. Earlier in the meeting the commission unanimously approved the agenda, the Sept. 9, 2025 minutes, claims totaling $24,249.20 and the monthly budget reports after motions by commissioners and unanimous votes.
Police Chief Jacob Miller updated the commission, saying the department is currently fully staffed. He reported that dispatch personnel are no longer working 12-hour shifts and now work 40 hours per week, a change Miller said should reduce overtime and give employees more time off between shifts. Miller also reported two recent hires are performing well, that the department is nearing completion of the Statelink implementation, and that Gertson and Bennett have completed Terminal Agency Coordinator training.
Under old business the commission tabled discussion of extra office space for deputies at the Law Enforcement Center until Sheriff Kruger can attend. Commissioner Rick Pedersen reported that Jim Gronbach is planning to lay cement at the LEC's west entrance to address water entering the building.
Pedersen also suggested the commission begin work on union contracts for staff. The commission set its next meeting for Nov. 12, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. The meeting adjourned at 9:19 a.m.
