Administrator Francine told the board the resolution adopts recommendations from a memorandum and will collect detailed data on calls, traffic offenses, civil infractions, misdemeanors, felonies and contraband seizures to determine staffing needs by shift. "So the intention here for strategic plan is to make sure that every commissioner has their input along with the committees that they serve," Francine said, adding that staff will compile comparative data from other agencies and that the sheriff and undersheriff have been cooperative.
Francine said the work will include a set of specific questions to be routed to the budget committee and to law enforcement for feedback before any staffing changes are proposed. Commissioners said the information will also be important for public reporting as a millage request approaches next year; one commissioner noted the value of showing the public the effect of 24-hour road patrols on citations and calls.
The board approved the resolution following discussion; a roll call recorded affirmative responses from commissioners during the vote.
What happens next: Francine and two commissioners will convene with staff to review the collected data and return recommendations to the full board. The resolution does not itself change staffing; it authorizes the planning and data-collection effort that will inform future budget or staffing proposals.
