At the July 7 commission meeting, staff and a contracted success mentor described a recent client interaction that county social-services staff characterized as a tangible navigation success.
The navigation center, operating with staff contracted through an organization described as "100 percent San Juan," provides triage and casework for high-needs clients. Jennifer Johnson told commissioners she helped a man recently released from jail replace his New Mexico ID, contact agencies to restore SNAP benefits and obtain a donated bicycle to address an immediate transportation barrier. Johnson said the client was highly motivated, and that the combination of restored benefits, an ID and a bicycle helped sustain that motivation toward employment.
Commissioners praised the navigation center's work and thanked staff. The presentation highlighted transportation and access to documents and the internet as recurring barriers for residents seeking employment.
