Personnel Committee approves Facilities Maintenance Technician role focused on HVAC and skilled trades

The Zeeland Personnel Committee voted unanimously March 12 to establish a Facilities Maintenance Technician position and adopt a salary range of $49,456.85 to $74,185.28, with a midpoint of $61,821.07.
Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Plockmeyer said the intent is to shift an existing custodian/building-maintenance role toward a more maintenance-focused position ‘‘to place additional emphasis on building systems, particularly HVAC systems,’’ while continuing to support overall facility needs and event functions. Plockmeyer told the committee the position will focus on skilled maintenance and repair work across city buildings, including electrical and plumbing, and will coordinate with contractors and vendors as needed.
Plockmeyer said the reclassification is not a net new position but a realignment already anticipated and included in the FY26 budget; staff indicated the position will also appear in the proposed FY27 budget and that no additional budgetary impacts are expected as a result of the change.
A committee member suggested developing written work instructions for the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor to clarify shifting responsibilities as the technician role takes on more technical duties. The committee did not object to staff moving forward with the position redesign.
BPW Vice Chair Cooney moved to establish the position and set the salary range; Mayor Pro-Tem Gruppen seconded the motion, which carried by unanimous voice vote.
The action is intended to increase the city’s in-house capacity for HVAC troubleshooting and operation (including snowmelt systems) and to allow the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor to concentrate on oversight and project management.
The committee adjourned at 12:39 PM.
