Members said the draft (originating in 2012) should explicitly address when non-RIIL programs (for example sailing) require school committee approval and whether those activities must reference governing associations for insurance and safety compliance. "If approved," the committee noted, describes how non-RIIL activities can be brought under committee oversight, and staff were asked to check if sailing already has prior school committee approval.
The group discussed whether the policy should use the word "curriculum" when describing athletics; several members said athletics is not the academic curriculum and suggested alternative phrasing such as "part of the high-school experience." Committee members also recommended referencing related policies—Title IX, coaching background checks and volunteer rules—rather than duplicating those policies in full within the athletics document. They asked staff to add a brief description of the athletic director's oversight role in the policy to provide context for families.
Intramural and club activities prompted questions about compensation and budget treatment; members asked staff to confirm stipend practices and whether insurance coverage differs for RIL-sanctioned sports versus local club or intramural offerings. The committee did not forward the draft and instructed staff (Rob and others) to produce a cleaner, more specific draft for a future meeting.
No formal vote was taken on athletics; the committee agreed by discussion that the draft required significant editing before it could be recommended to the school committee.
