Chesterfield commission to reply on lot-transfer request, review draft letters on glass vases and plantings

At the June 10 meeting, Commissioner Margaret Winn reported receipt of correspondence from a resident, Tom Duston, who asked to transfer ownership of one of his lots in Friedsam Cemetery to another town resident. The commission decided to respond by asking Duston to follow the town's procedure: sell the lot back to the town so the town can then resell it and properly track ownership.
Winn also distributed two draft letters for commissioners' consideration. One is addressed to a Friedsam lot holder advising against the use of glass vases because they have repeatedly broken and created hazards for staff and visitors; the other is a letter to specific lot holders in multiple cemeteries notifying them that plantings on their lots do not conform with existing cemetery policies. Commissioners agreed both letters will be discussed and finalized at the July meeting.
In related business, Winn distributed a draft "Right To Inter Application" for future discussion; commissioners listed it as an item for the July agenda. The meeting record also shows one lot was sold at Friedsam Cemetery during the reporting period. No members of the public were present at the meeting to comment on these actions.
The commission will revisit the lot-transfer procedure and the draft letters at its next meeting on July 8, 2026, at 3:00 P.M.
