Chesterfield cemetery commissioners cite maintenance backlog and staffing concerns

Margaret Winn, a commissioner, called the Town of Chesterfield Cemetery Commission to order June 10 and the commission approved the May 13 meeting minutes unanimously.
The most immediate operational concerns came from Sexton Russ Mundell, who reviewed the expense report for the week ending June 6 and reported that the overall cemetery budget "stands at 83% remaining." Mundell told the commission a fallen tree in the West Burying Ground has been removed but "there are still many tipped/fallen stones that need to be uprighted and repaired," and he raised staffing issues including employees sometimes working alone and the need for additional help.
Commissioners discussed possible responses to the upkeep and staffing concerns. In old business, they also reviewed an additional invoice related to the recent purchase of a zero-turn commercial mower; Commissioner Bruce Potter offered to visit the vendor to try to resolve the billing issue. The commission noted an upcoming scheduled burial on June 27 in Spofford Village.
The meeting also recorded that one lot has been sold at Friedsam Cemetery. Commissioners set several items for further action on the July agenda, including follow-up on personnel and repair priorities.
The commission adjourned at 7:57 P.M. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 3:00 P.M.
