Board approves VSBA policy updates and plans to move from BoardDocs to Diligent

The Fluvanna County School Board approved updates to its policies using templates from the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) and heard staff explain a planned transition from BoardDocs to the Diligent meeting-management platform.
Miss Kreitzer described most of the VSBA changes as minor and syntactical — for example, replacing "shall" with "will" or updating code references — and staff said redlines in the template are not always preserved when the VSBA template is revised.
Board members asked that the final policy documents include the division’s name where VSBA templates use placeholders; staff agreed to fill those fields before final adoption.
On the meeting-management system, staff said the division will implement Diligent with a planned full launch on Oct. 1; the platform includes a calendar of events, integrated public-signup features and the ability to display meeting materials. Staff cautioned there could be initial glitches and said they will provide training and demonstrations at a retreat.
The board voted to adopt the VSBA policy updates as presented with the minor changes described by staff and to proceed with the Diligent implementation plan.
During policy discussion members asked specifically about a change to the cell-phone policy: staff said state statute requires broader application, so language removing an "instructional time" carve-out was adopted to align with state requirements.
