Contractor says Abrams project on track; five classrooms, new toilets due by Aug. 12

Mister Bauer, the board’s project presenter, told the Fluvanna County School Board on July 8 that contractor S Works began construction on the Abrams project June 15 and has completed abatement and demolition.
"They've already started putting gypsum wallboard up yesterday," Bauer said, adding the contractor was slightly ahead of its internal schedule and that the work remains within the project's $1,800,000 maximum budget.
The presentation, which included floor plans and progress photos, described the scope as demolition, framing, gypsum installation, casework, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. Bauer said the plan calls for daytime construction to pause on Aug. 12 — the first day of school — with remaining work completed evenings and weekends and final closeout and punch-list items finished by about Aug. 27.
Bauer also reported limited, expected asbestos-related material removed behind old chalkboard "pucks," which he said were not outside the scope of the contract. "The only thing that was found that was not already known was the pucks behind the chalkboards," he said.
Board members asked operational questions about schedule and costs. Several praised the contractor’s responsiveness: "They really have been a very much a team player," Bauer said.
The board did not take any formal additional action on the project at this meeting; Bauer said staff would return with further updates at the next regular meeting.
The board will receive another construction update at its August meeting and will monitor milestones tied to classroom readiness and safety for the start of school.
