County manager reports trauma grant, finance award, new medic-only hiring plan and Stiles Park work timeline

County Manager Joey updated the board on several operational items. He said Emergency Services received a no-match trauma grant for $6,221 and no board action was required. He also congratulated Finance on earning the Government Finance Officers Association certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2023 — the county’s 17th straight year to receive the recognition.
Joey described a new hiring initiative to recruit medic-only (paramedic) positions that do not require firefighter duties to help address staffing challenges in the fire/emergency services department; he said the change requires no new budget action and staff will recruit at hospitals and job fairs.
Finally, Joey reported that active work on Stiles Park has begun, including parking-lot work and grading; trail contractors will resume when weather permits and county staff are aiming for a partial opening in June.
The board asked clarifying questions and no formal action was taken during the work session.
