Nevada, Missouri, council approves landfill lease, water-line extension and equipment purchases

The Nevada, Missouri, City Council on Tuesday approved a lease with Harbit Communications for a portion of land formerly part of the city landfill, voted to advance a water-line extension for a private resident on first reading, and authorized two equipment purchases including replacement police vehicles and a skid steer.
Mayor Carol Branham opened the meeting at 7:00 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Councilmembers unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included the appointment of Thomas Taylor to the Planning Commission to fill a term expiring Jan. 31, 2028.
On old business the council moved Bill No. 2026-014 to second reading and, after the mayor read the ordinance title, passed it by roll call (Aye: Miller, Selby, Barker, Branham, Miles). The ordinance approves a lease agreement with Harbit Communications, Inc., for a portion of land located in Township 36 north formerly known as the City of Nevada landfill.
In new business Councilperson Amber Barker moved and Councilperson Sim Miller seconded to place Bill No. 2026-015 on first read. Mayor Branham read the ordinance title; the measure to approve a water-line extension to provide service to Kermit Pritchett passed on first reading by roll call (Aye: Miles, Miller, Selby, Barker, Branham). The ordinance was presented on first reading and no further details about construction timing or funding were specified in the minutes.
The council also considered spending for city equipment. Resolution No. 1924 to accept a bid from Corwin Ford Republic for replacement police vehicles drew council questions about maintenance schedules, vehicle rotation and take-home car policies; Captain Westerhold answered those operational questions. The resolution was approved unanimously. Councilmembers then approved Resolution No. 1925 to accept a bid from KC Bobcat for a skid steer and attachments; that resolution also passed unanimously.
Mayor Branham recognized former Mayor Bill Carlini on his 100th birthday and said the NRMC Board has requested an executive session with the council on May 26. She reported that the Baker Tilly firm (which handled the prior city manager search) no longer provides executive-search services and asked the council to authorize staff to issue a Request for Qualifications for a new city manager search. Councilperson Sim Miller moved to issue the RFQ, Councilperson Miranda Selby seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
Interim City Manager Mary Wilson had no report. City Treasurer Bill Denman was absent but had compiled a financial report for council members to review. City Clerk Cynthia Dye reminded the council of upcoming community and training events, and Councilperson Bill Miles requested further discussion about the city's engineering services at a future meeting.
No executive session was held. Councilmember Amber Barker moved to adjourn; the motion passed by roll call and the meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
