The Dawson County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing Jan. 29, 2025, as the beginning of the Lunar New Year and praising the social, cultural and economic contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander American communities in Georgia.
The proclamation, read by the chair, notes Georgia is home to approximately 495,000 Asian and Pacific Islander Americans and lists communities that commonly celebrate the holiday, including China, Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan. The board voted to approve the proclamation after a motion to adopt it (motion recorded in the transcript as moved by Commissioner Stowers and seconded by Commissioner Bruce); the chair recorded the vote as 4–0 in favor.
A community presenter thanked the chair and commissioners and said they will take the proclamation to area Asian-owned businesses. "I just wanna thank you chairman and commissioners for doing this for me," the presenter said, and said they have presented similar proclamations around the state in prior years.
The proclamation was presented during the meeting’s opening agenda and does not create a new county program or funding obligation. The board moved on to the day’s other business after adopting the proclamation.
