Nehawka tables clerk hiring, approves claims and reports near-zero SLFRF balance

The Village of Nehawka Board of Trustees deferred hiring a clerk/treasurer until late June, approved routine claims totaling $31,752.14 and heard an update on American Rescue Plan/SLFRF reporting that shows nearly all funds expended.
Trustees said one of two applicants for the clerk/treasurer position was on vacation, so interviews were rescheduled for June 29 or 30. The board approved payroll and vendor claims across General, Library, Sewer, Water and Ambulance accounts totaling $31,752.14.
Acting Clerk/Treasurer Pat Neu reported that U.S. Treasury reporting had been difficult but that the village lists total SLFRF funds received as $37,521.40; earlier certified obligations totaled $14,299.23; obligations recorded in 2024 totaled $23,222.00; uploaded invoices match the $23,222.00 and the remaining unspent balance is $0.17. The village is awaiting a U.S. Treasury response to its May 28 report.
Neu also noted a First State Bank inactivity notice on the communications-tower savings account and that an Amazon Business Prime renewal scheduled for $179 was cancelled. Public commenters raised concerns about rat sightings and meter reading calculations; the board said two disconnect notices would be mailed with June statements.
