Glassport fire department wins FEMA grant; state staffing study recommends stipend program

The Glassport Borough Council on Jan. 21 heard that the borough's fire department received a FEMA grant to construct a fitness center and that a state staffing study recommended a stipend program to improve staffing.
Councilman Paul Trunzo reported department activity, saying the fire department responded to 44 calls in December and 596 calls in 2024 and logged 1,258 man-hours of training. "The department was able to obtain a FEMA grant for a new fitness center which will be completed within the first half of 2025," Trunzo said.
Trunzo also summarized results of a staffing study obtained from the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute. According to the report, the department should consider enacting a stipend program to staff the fire station; Trunzo said the department is pursuing funding options to enact the policy to better protect Glassport and surrounding communities.
Council did not take formal action on staffing policy at the meeting; the presentation was recorded as an informational report and the department will seek funding options before further steps are brought to council.
