Council approves six-month extension for Desert Willows development agreement

The Palm Desert City Council on July 9 approved a six-month extension to the development agreement for Desert Willows, the council's staff said, moving the project's expiration from August 2026 to February 2027.
Carlos Flores, of the city's Development Services Department, told the council the request from WBC Rancho Mirage Inc. seeks additional time to finalize updates to the project's performance schedule. "This is set to expire in August of this year, and we're asking for an extension until February 2027," Flores said, adding that no changes to land use, development intensity, site design or existing entitlements are proposed.
Flores said 300 units have been approved under the development agreement and approximately 80 units remain subject to the outstanding performance schedule. Staff recommended a "common-sense" CEQA exemption for the limited administrative extension. No members of the public spoke on the item.
Council member Nastandi moved approval and the motion passed unanimously, 5-0. The extension is intended to give staff and the applicant time to clarify obligations and the required timing of remaining steps before returning to the council with revised agreement language.
