Byron council weighs park memorial and public‑works staffing; approves advertising for summer help

Byron Town Council members discussed a proposal to revitalize the south-side park and possibly rename it in memory of two girls who recently died in the community, but the council took no formal action and added the item to the April agenda for further consideration.

Beckie Bates presented the idea to the council, saying she had consulted both fathers and that she was not asking for town funds: "I'm not asking for money, just permission." Council members expressed mixed opinions about whether a park memorial would be appropriate or if another location might be preferable. The council agreed to place Beckie on the April meeting agenda to continue the discussion.

Council members and staff also discussed the town’s need for additional certified water and sewer personnel as current license holders plan to retire. Public Works Director Jacob Gruell said many public‑works duties require two people, and Mayor Allan Clark noted the benefit of having another person available for emergency and weekend call‑outs. To address short‑term staffing, the council voted to advertise for summer help: Councilwoman Karma Sanders moved to advertise; Councilman Brandon Hessenthaler seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

Assistant Clerk/Treasurer Lexi Sanders also briefed the council on utility-billing line items and said she is preparing a water shut‑off list for accounts with very high balances; she will notify residents per town code before any shutoffs occur.
