The Hastings City commission held a public hearing and authorized the conditional sale of a 1.16-acre parcel on Lightbourne Court in the Hastings Industrial Park to local auto repair operator Greg Lau.
Staff member John explained that the parcel is surrounded by industrial uses and that Lau, who owns and operates an existing auto repair facility nearby, proposed buying the lot to build a dedicated auto repair shop. John said the city’s standard price on the parcel is about $2.15 per square foot, which for 1.16 acres equates to roughly $108,800. He told the commission that soil borings identified clay and other unsuitable soils, and a contractor estimated about $17,800 (John also referenced an estimate of about $18,000) would be needed to remove and replace unsuitable soils for building.
In response, staff proposed a reduced purchase price of $91,022 to reflect required site work. The commission opened the required public hearing, noted only Lau was present, closed the hearing, and moved to authorize the sale pending a purchase agreement and the usual planning approvals (site plan and special-use permit from the planning commission and city council). The motion carried by voice vote; staff said the finalized purchase agreement will be brought back for signature at a following meeting.
