The Redondo Beach Public Amenities Commission voted July 8 to formally acknowledge volunteer Jack Ratchek for his years of service supporting Little League activities in city parks.
Deputy Community Services Director Orta told the commission the volunteer-acknowledgment subcommittee reviewed Ratchek's application and "is recommending approval" for formal recognition under the program that honors unpaid work sustaining parks and green spaces. Orta said the subcommittee's report, the program guidelines and the original application were included in the agenda packet.
Commissioners offered praise for Ratchek's hours and leadership. Commissioner Lang said the nominee's commitment was visible during seasons when the field manager and volunteers are on site: "I've seen the work that he puts in ... he's here all the time." Another commissioner said Ratchek's role as league president was "a heck of a dedication."
A motion to refer the subcommittee's recommendation to the next step was moved, seconded and approved with no public comment. Orta said staff will invite Ratchek to a subsequent meeting for a formal presentation and to receive a certificate and the commission's surfboard tabletop award.
The item was handled as a routine civic acknowledgment; no ordinance, contract or budget appropriation was adopted as part of the action.
