Mannington committee adopts ordinance to bar marijuana-related land uses while exempting medical use

The Mannington Township Committee on Jan. 3 adopted Ordinance No. 19-02 to prohibit "all marijuana-related land use and development in all zoning districts," while explicitly excluding the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
The motion to adopt the ordinance was made by Asay and seconded by Bethanne Patrick and carried. The committee returned to public session after a closed-session discussion that the committee had said concerned attorney/client matters and tactics for protecting public safety and property.
The committee set a public hearing on the ordinance for Feb. 7, 2019, at 6:30 p.m., and sent the proposed ordinance to the Mannington Township Planning Board for review under N.J.S.A. 40:55D-26 and -62. The Planning Board was asked to report within 35 days on consistency with the township master plan and any recommended changes.
The ordinance text adopted for introduction states it does not apply to medical marijuana use. No public comments on the ordinance were recorded at the meeting; the committee’s next formal step is the Planning Board report and the scheduled public hearing.
