Morganton staff outlines UDO outreach, public workshops and August events

Planning staff updated the Morganton Planning and Zoning Commission on progress and outreach for the city’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) update.
Wendy said the consulting team has completed initial stakeholder consultations with commission members, City Council, the board of adjustment and local development professionals. She reported an in-person public workshop on June 25 drew about 50 attendees and staff also did pop-up outreach at a TGIF event, speaking with roughly 30–35 members of the public.
Wendy listed commission members serving on the advisory committee (Lee, Vinnie and Pete Wallace) and named Erin Kaiser and Judy Francis as additional representatives; she invited commission volunteers to staff a UDO booth at an upcoming festival and said draft chapters will be produced for advisory review after the August consultations. Staff directed the public to the City of Morganton website for UDO materials, boards from the public workshop and a map-based comment tool that allows residents to drop pins and leave feedback.
Commissioners welcomed the inclusive outreach and noted the timing gives an opportunity to fold stakeholder input into draft ordinance chapters before formal adoption steps. Wendy said the next scheduled community event is in mid-August and to watch city social media and the city website for confirmed dates and volunteer opportunities.
