At the May 2 Mannington Township meeting, Janet Sheridan explained a proposed archaeological project in Marshalltown and outlined three phases: Phase I involved a site walk that identified 12 areas of interest; Phase II would target specific sites and involve 1-foot-diameter test digs to look for artifacts; Phase III would involve more extensive excavation if warranted.
Committee member Horner said he had reviewed Sheridan's application and had shared it with George Reese of the JIF RMC, who questioned why the Township was listed as the applicant rather than the performing entities. Sheridan responded that law requires the governmental entity that owns the property to be the applicant. Horner asked Sheridan to share her State contact information so he could consult the State for guidance and requested that Sheridan supply proper certificates of insurance from the parties performing the work so that George Reese could review them in advance.
Mayor Asay told the public any archaeological finds would be sent to Montclair University for initial handling and then kept at the Salem County Historical Society. Horner and Sheridan agreed that Horner would provide the specifics required on the insurance certificates and Sheridan would provide the State contact so the committee could move forward.
