Mannington Mills seeks township co-permittee status as it pursues landfill closure and creek cleanup

Dave Kitts of Mannington Mills briefed the Mannington Township Committee on March 25 about the company's plan to close its landfill that sits opposite the creek from the township's old landfill and to remediate portions of Pledger Creek. Kitts said the Mill has filed a landfill closure plan with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and that plan has been approved, but the company must perform a wetlands delineation before designing a remedy.
"The point of the meeting was — how can they get to where they need to be," Kitts said, explaining that Mannington Mills would avoid disturbing the township's old landfill while cleaning up parts of Pledger Creek. He said the township would need to be a co-permittee because the township owns some of the area within the creek the company will be cleaning. Kitts said Mannington Mills' environmental counsel could draft an agreement to address the co-permittee role.
Mayor Asay offered to hold a "mini sale" to sell the Mill the landfill and some foreclosed lots in Claysville, but the final outcome was not determined at the March 25 session. The committee recorded that the item will be revisited at the April 4, 2019 Township Committee meeting.
