The Town of Sherman Planning & Zoning Commission on April 9 accepted for processing a Planning & Zoning Commission application to amend multiple sections of the zoning regulations to conform to state child‑care statutes.
The proposal removes the word “Day” and replaces it with “Child” in relevant uses and definitions (for example, changing “Family Day Child Care Home” to “Family Child Care Home”) and adds Family Child Care Homes and Group Child Care Homes as permitted accessory uses in Zones A through D. The amendment text cites Connecticut General Statutes Section 19a‑77 and licensing by the Office of Early Childhood as the definitional standard.
Clerk Christine Branson explained the change is intended to bring the town’s regulations into compliance with State Statute 8‑3j (Child Care Services). The commission accepted the application; a public hearing was scheduled for June 4, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. The motion to accept the application was made by J. Burruano, seconded by D. Febbraio, and recorded as unanimous.
The proposed amendments list an effective date of June 26, 2026. Commissioners noted the change is largely technical — aligning local terminology with state definitions — but will be subject to public review at the scheduled hearing.
