Select Board tables cross-connection policy updates after residents raise concerns

The Select Board on June 17 tabled proposed updates to the town’s Cross Connection Policy for the water system after members and residents said the updated policy was not included in the meeting packet and requested public input.
Paul Zimmerman spoke during public input and again during the agenda item, questioning the need for mandatory double-check valves on municipal water services and calling some requirements “frivolous government overreach.” Other residents described sewage and water backups as possible causes for concern and urged caution. Parks, Public Works and Water Department staff described state requirements and the town’s goals for contamination prevention. Public Works Director Steve Randall noted the policy discussion should allow for public input rather than immediate adoption.
Select Board Member Linda Murray moved to table the Cross Connection Policy until the next meeting when the board will include public input; the motion passed 4-0. The board requested that staff add the updated policy text to the packet for the next meeting and prepare clarifying information on the state-required double-check valves and any penalties currently associated with noncompliance.
